What you put into your body is just as important as what you put onto your body. Which is why, along with a healthy breakfast to start the day, it’s just as important to nourish your skin with the same healthy organic goodness. Nourish Organic is the perfect line for this.

Nourish Organic was one of the very first beauty companies to work with the USDA and continues to do so to create pure, certified organic products that are also environmentally friendly. All their products are gluten free, vegan and certified organic. Nourish Organic’s ‘Pledge to Purity’ means their products contain zero chemicals, artificial fragrances and preservatives, making it healthy for you and the planet.

To start off a productive morning, it’s always great to have a routine. Mine is a good thorough skincare regimen before I apply my makeup, do my hair and get dressed. Like most people, I don’t have a whole lot of time so I like to keep things simple, so here are the skin-care products I’ve been using each morning to start my day off right.

my NOURISH ORGANIC morning routine

FRESH FIG – HYDRATING & SMOOTHING BODY

Out of the shower, I apply the body lotion with an aloe & shea formula. It’s fast absorbing, non-greasy formula is perfect for the morning. You can get dressed without a mess. I personally have pretty sensitive skin, and I find this lotion to be really soothing. It keeps my skin really soft all day and the scent is very subtle and natural.

LAVENDER MINT – FRESH & DRY DEODORANT

After the lotion comes the deodorant. I can’t stress how important it is to use all natural deodorants. I know the struggle of trying to find the right kind, and I think this one might be the answer! This deodorant works to mask body odour and uses natural ingredients including cornstarch and plant enzymes to keep moisture away. Most importantly, there is NO aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens or other artificial ingredients that might harm you. Because deodorant is applied to your sensitive underarms, which house very important lymph glands, build up of these harmful chemical compounds can increase your chances of getting breast cancer, having kidney problems and other diseases.

CUCUMBER + WATERCRESS – MOISTURIZING CREAM FACE CLEANSER

Next up is the face cleanser. It’s fragrance free, which means it won’t irritate or dry your sensitive skin while washing away any dirt and leftover makeup. It’s intended for all skin types and works like a charm.

ROSEWATER + WITCH HAZEL – REFRESHING & BALANCING, ALCOHOL FREE FACE TONER

After washing your face, it’s great to use a toner to really ensure all the dirt and makeup is gone and your pores are ready to face the day. Witch hazel contains amazing antioxidants that work to tighten your pores and even out skin tone. It’s also really great in reducing puffiness and skin inflammations, acne and eczema. Rose Water has really similar properties, full of antioxidants and vitamins C and E. Just like Witch Hazel, it works to tighten pores, reduce redness and helps fight against aging skin.

APRICOT + ROSEHIP – PURE HYDRATING ARGAN FACE SERUM

After a thorough wash and toner, I like to apply a face serum. 2-4 pumps of this onto the skin and décolleté will keep your skin hydrated all day. It’s design to deeply hydrate the skin and soften it. This serum contains essential fatty acids that are great for reducing signs of stress and fatigue (which I think all of us could use a little of every once and a while, especially in the morning)!

AVOCADO + ARGAN OIL – RENEWING + COOLING EYE TREATMENT

If it’s the weekend, I love using this cooling eye treatment to brighten up and protect the skin around my eyes. The avocado and argan work to deeply moisturize the thin and sensitive under-eye skin, helping to reduce symptoms of a long and tiring week.

AVOCADO + ARGAN – REWING EYE CREAM

This one is very similar to the eye treatment, but I like it for everyday use. Using Nourish Organic eye cream reduces puffiness and redness while adding a layer of protection for the day ahead.

ARGAN + POMEGRANATE – ULTRA HYDRATING FACE CREAM

Last but not least, I apply the Nourish Organic hydrating face cream to my face and neck. It works really well to block out any dryness, by creating a layer of protection that helps keep the moisture in. It contains antioxidants from the pomegranate, which help to protect the skin from environmental stressed. And from the Açai, we get the benefits of reducing fine lines and signs of stress and fatigue. Double the damage-control.

nourish-organic-facecream

Like I mentioned earlier, I think it’s really important to incorporate natural, organic and pure products into everyday life. Our skin is technically our largest organ, so it’s important that we’re feeding it the right ingredients. Check out more of Nourish Organic products here. Get your skincare back on track with these affordable, healthy products.

Let’s face it, periods can be a super huge drag. They make us feel bloated, irritated and tired all at the same time. They make us crave ice-cream, chocolate, binge watching Netflix and staying inside. Here are some ways to stay healthy and happy during your menstrual cycle.

  excercise-duringmenstrualcycle

Exercise

I know you’ve probably heard this a thousand times over, but exercise is a GREAT way to get through the menstrual pains of the month. Natural endorphins will fill your irritated mind with happy thoughts that will bring you back to a calm and clear state of mind. Consider light cardio or even yoga to add into your monthly routine.

eatinghealthy-during-menstrualcycle

Eat Well

If you’re good at tracking your period, or on the pill, be conscious of what you eat before and after your period starts. Stay away from too much sugar or salt, as this can lead to more painful cramps and heavier bleeding.

alcohol-smoking-during-menstrualcycle

Keep It Cool With Alcohol & Smoking

If you’ve ever found your period to heavier, lighter, longer or less frequent, it could have to do with your intake of alcohol or your smoking habits. Don’t get me wrong, I love a glass of red wine when it’s that time of the month. But, as alcohol effects every organ in your body, it also increases levels of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Either can lead to an irregular period and catch you off guard. According to many studies women who smoke can experience much worse symptoms of PMS than women who don’t. It has similar symptoms to alcohol; increasing your hormonal levels, causing your period to be much worse than it has to be. (take a look at Shape Magazine’s article for more info on these topics)

sleep-during-menstrual-cycle

Get Enough Sleep

Can’t stress it enough. You need enough sleep during your period. We all feel fatigue during our period, possibly due to lower iron levels. However, because of hormonal changes you might need extra z’s during your cycle. Some things that might help you are a nice bath, a good book before bed, meditation or anything that helps you relax.

organyc-tampons-menstrualcycle

Use Organyc Menstrual Products

Ok here comes the actual products you use during your menstrual cycle. This is probably the most important point to make! Like what you eat and what you wear, what goes inside your body (in other ways) matters. Think about it, you don’t want anything toxic inside your body, so why would you let your tampon, filled with synthetic materials, up there. Most tampons are bleached with chlorine, which is a carcinogen – meaning it causes cancer. Organyc tampons are made with 100% organic cotton, meaning there are 0 pesticides. They’re chlorine free, so you won’t increase your risk of cancer. And they’re biodegradable, which means they’re good for the environment! Making a happy, healthy and conscious period a priority!

In my previous post about having rosacea, I mentioned that I had decided to find a holistic way to heal from the inside, out. And while doing some research I found Derma Bright Clinic, a holistic skincare and slimming centre in Vancouver.

About Derma Bright Clinic:

Derma Bright Clinic is unique in that they have a holistic approach to skin with a focus on anti-aging and acne; using non-invasive technology too as they are results orientated. Estie and her team believe that great skin starts from within. How you treat your body will have an affect on how your skin looks. Targeting from the inside and then assisting the process through the outside using aesthetic services such as exfoliation, professional extraction, masks and peels, a good take home routine. Derma Bright Clinic uses products that are natural and effective, that wont pollute the skin. Furthermore, their passion is helping clients achieve healthy, bright skin and ultimately a state of well being.

Meeting the Derma Bright Team:

Upon arriving at Derma Bright Clinic, I was warmly greeted by Estrellita (Estie), the owner and shown around the clinic. She mentioned the services and programs offered, some of their specialty services and product lines. Estie also told me about other practitioners that are hosted in the clinic, and what they have to offer.

Derma Bright Clinic Vancouver

I was then introduced to Sandra, master aesthetician, who I would be seeing in regards to my rosacea. She kindly handed me some forms to fill out, where they get a feel for what type of lifestyle you live, health, etc. Sandra then explained to me that I would be having a “Facial- Time Block,” which includes:

  • A personalized skin care consultation before each treatment to ensure the best service and outcome;
  • The time block format is a subjective treatment and the Aesthetician will employ a number of methods including but not limited to: cleansing, toner, exfoliation, extractions, mask or serum application, moisturizer, and mineral powder or SPF application for sun protection; hand/arm and/or shoulder massage as well as lifestyle coaching;
  • The Time Block Format may also use our Oxylight or Juvesa machines; the modalities can include Micro-current, Oxygen, Ultrasound, Micro-dermabrasion or LED light;

My facial time block experience:

As I walked into the room, I felt at ease knowing that finally I was getting the show on the road. Sandra explained what some of the motives of my rosacea may be and that the root cause is internal. She said that besides the external treatments she was going to do, I had to do my part too. I was in charge of the most important treatment,  the internal. What she meant was that I had to commit to eating differently because it was obvious that it was something that I was ingesting that was causing my rosacea. Sandra recommended that I eliminate the following foods from my diet: eggs, shellfish, dairy, refined sugars, mangoes, and cold foods to see how my body/face reacted. She also recommended that I add the following to my diet: lots of Vitamin C, honey,  melons, papaya and chlorophyll.

Me excited to get first facial time block for my rosacea

Me excited to get first facial time block for my rosacea

Now, it was time to get down to business, the facial. Sandra started by cleansing my face with a Whistler Naturals pumpkin cleanser that I swear I wanted to eat it smelled so good! Toner was second, and an exfoliation with Sandra’s own “Pearl Polish,” which really worked away all of the dead skin, getting down to the “new” soft and healthy skin. She exfoliated for a good 15 minutes, now you can imagine how much dead skin was just peeling off.

POP!

Then came the extractions, the popping of the pustules. Oh gaaawsh, I had never felt such pain on my face. I honestly thought I was getting poked with a needle, seriously. But, alas when I finally opened my eyes and breathing to take a look, she was just using her fingers (in gloves). Then, I felt like such a wimp, LOL. Then came a little bit of a sting, when she wiped my face clean with some natural alcohol.

After, she applied a soothing honey mask all over my face. She let me know that honey has many great benefits for our bodies and skin. So, that honey in your cupboard, you can lather that up on your face after your nighttime face wash. It doesn’t have to be fancy, honey.  Plain honey will do the trick.

I really liked that Sandra talked through each of her steps, explaining what technique she was doing, why she was doing it, and what I can do at home.

Oxylight Machine:

Then, she applied a moisturizer and a mineral powder. Last, but not least, I got a couple minutes alone with the Oxylight machine. This machine offers LED light therapy on its panel with oxygen infusion at the same time. Pure oxygen is infused onto the face, and is then inhaled through the nose and taken into the lungs, where the blood carries this oxygen throughout the body.

This last step in my first treatment was the cherry on the cake. It really sealed the deal and left me feeling excited, relaxed and eager all at the same time. I was a little nervous to look in the mirror and see how red my face was going to be, but I knew it would settle down after a couple of hours. Immediately after getting up, I took a selfie with a filter. Then, I felt guilty, embarrassed and kind of ashamed for doing that. If I was on this new path of acceptance (and treatment) for my rosacea, I had to be honest with myself, and you too. So, here it goes…both selfies.

My Rosacea Selfies- With Filter on Left- WithOUT filter on Right

I was excited that I had finally taken the first steps of treating my rosacea holistically. The elimination of some foods from my diet was going to be fine, not easy, but do-able. Especially since one a couple of my favourite pregnancy snacks were on the hit list…and no cold food/drinks (ah, it was Summer! SO HARD). But, like they say…

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Living with rosacea

Even though I have had rosacea for four years, living with rosacea is something I am still getting used to. And it’s not always easy. There are good days, and many more bad days. I’m just being honest. There are days where I’m feeling great, and other where I don’t even want to go outside because my face is so red. Rosacea is a chronic disease that slowly eats away at your self-esteem, leaving you feeling defeated and embarrassed.

Last week I shared an emotional post about coming to terms and accepting that I have rosacea. I also shared that I was going to be writing weekly installments (every Friday) about rosacea, and my experience of living with it. So, before jumping into the deep end, I figured it would be a good idea to answer some basic FAQs about rosacea in this weeks rosacea post.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects mainly the face. Most common areas are the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It may appear as blushing or “facial flushing” and become more persistent and visible over time.

I have rosacea on my cheeks, chin and forehead. I first noticed rosacea as redness that would come and go. But, overtime the redness became more persistent and visible, spreading from one side of my face (cheek) to the other, then to my forehead and later my chin. I also have pimple like bumps (not acne), as well as itching and burning sensation, which causes my skin to be dry, and bumpy.

There are four categories of rosacea, which range from mild to moderate, severe and ocular. Mild rosacea being “minor,” severe and ocular rosacea are “severe.”

Living with Rosacea- What is it, Who get it, Signs and Symptoms, What Causes it?

Living with Rosacea- What is it, Who get it, Signs and Symptoms, What Causes it?

Who gets rosacea?

Reading a lot of different rosacea forums, I’ve noticed that rosacea does not discriminate based on age, sex or ethnicity. Although, most of the people I know who have rosacea are fair skinned.

According the the Canadian Dermatology Association, “Rosacea usually develops in adults between ages 30 and 50. It affects both men and women, although it seems to affect more women and more severe cases seem to occur in men. It tends to affect people with fair skin, although rosacea can develop in those of any skin type.”

Signs and Symptoms.

Rosacea symptoms can vary from one person to another. Below are some common signs and symptoms:

  • Frequent flushing or blushing on cheeks, nose, chin, forehead
  • Persistent redness
  • Red lines, due to enlarged blood vessels becoming visible
  • Dry skin
  • Burning, stinging, or itching
  • Pimple-like bumps without blackheads or whiteheads

What causes rosacea?

Unfortunately, nobody knows what specifically causes rosacea. There are several theories floating around that vary from genetics, to environmental factors, like chronic sun exposure.

Curing rosacea.

There is no known cure for rosacea, although it can be managed with appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes.

It’s hard to hear that there is no known cure for rosacea, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t treatments that can reduce, even eliminate symptoms. Living with rosacea means a lifestyle change, which includes seeking holistic alternatives, figuring out an effective skin care regime, and a new “diet.”

Where there is a will, there is a way, right! 😉

Having rosacea (row-zay-sha) sucks, especially if you are feeling like don’t have it under control and have lost the battle. I thought I didn’t care about having rosacea. But, the truth is, I do. It’s taken it’s toll on me; especially my self-esteem.

I’ve decided to start blogging about rosacea. Every Friday you can expect a post about rosacea; what it is, the ups and downs, tips (eating, make-up, etc.) and my journey in holistically getting rosacea under control, and hopefully getting “rid” of it.

So cheers to finally getting this off my chest, and starting to heal from the inside out, both emotionally, and physically.

Your face is really red.

They’re staring at me, they must be wondering what’s up with my face.

What happened to your face?

Ugh, I know, it’s ugly. It has changed.

You never had acne as a teen. Why do you have acne now?

Mmm, I know, right. It’s actually not acne, it’s rosacea.

And it SUCKS.

I first started noticing some redness on the left side of my cheek in 2012. Never put too much thought into it, and just let it be.

A couple years later, it started on the other right side. My doctor noticed and sent me to a dermatologist to check out what was happening to my skin. She was worried because I had “such nice skin” before, even during my teen years.

The dermatologist took about 15 minutes to check me out, said i had rosacea and basically gave me a prescription for topical medicine (some steroid cream that thins out your skin..) and some other drugs that were to be ingested orally. When I asked her what everything was, and if she could write it down for me, she said that “it wasn’t really important to know, that I should just do as instructed on the medication labels.”

So, as a well behaved patient, I left and ordered my prescription.  When I got home, I realized that I didn’t really feel comfortable putting something on my face that would cause damage to my skin, and I didn’t want to ingest some drugs that I didn’t know were really going to help me. I felt like an idiot for putting my foot down and demanding to know what the dermatologist was prescribing me. And for allowing her to make me feel so dumb and insecure.

rosacea

rosacea

Bueno, after deciding to throw it all in the trash and saying “ah, fuck it.” I never did anything to stabilize or get my rosacea under control. And here I am, about 4 years later with it all over my face.

I thought it wouldn’t get worse.

I thought it would just go away.

Why was I so naive? UGH.

Look at my effing face.

Why did I let it get this far?

After finally accepting that rosacea was starting to impact my life, and essentially how I felt about myself, I decided that it was time to take back control and figure this shit out.

I started noticing that my rosacea would flare up with certain foods (spicy, and dairy. oh, and alcohol), and the sun.

So about two months ago, I cut spicy and dairy out of my diet. Adios queso, yogurt, milk, ice cream…y chile.

I believe that the stuff I put into my body is affecting my face, and causing this reaction, my rosacea.

I decided that I had to find a team, that also believed that I had to heal from the inside, out. So the search began, and a couple weeks into it, I found Derma Bright Clinic, a holistic skincare and slimming centre.

Derma Bright Clinic is unique in that they have a holistic approach to skin with a focus on anti-aging and acne; using non-invasive technology too as they are results orientated.

Derma Bright Clinic intrigued me for several reasons. First they believe that great skin starts from within. How you treat your body will have an affect on how your skin looks. Targeting from the inside and then assisting the process through the outside using aesthetic services such as exfoliation, professional extraction, masks and peels, a good take home routine. Secondly, Derma Bright Clinic uses products that are natural and effective, that wont pollute the skin. Furthermore, their passion is helping clients achieve healthy, bright skin and ultimately a state of well being.

Derma Bright Clinic sounded great. I felt like I had found my team. Now, I just had to meet them in person and see if we clicked.

Zorah biocosmétiques  is a line of high quality cosmetic-care products designed, produced and distributed in Canada. Zorah products are made with organic, eco-friendly and fair-trade ingredients. Their products do not contain any animal products or mineral oils (ex.: petroleum) and are not tested on animals, YAY!

I absolutely adore the Zorah Pure Argan makeup products. I had the pleasure of trying out the Pure Argan BBB Cream in Pinky Beige, the Length & Care Mascara, Liquid Eyeliner, Lip Gloss in Léa and Ombré Eyeshadow. The main natural ingredient in all of these products, Argan oil, protects the skin, restores its’ natural barrier and neutralizes free radicals – making it the perfect ingredient for makeup!SONY DSC

SONY DSC My favourite product from the bunch is the BBB Cream in Pinky Beige. Slightly pigmented, the cream works to reduce redness (Because of its Argan oil base, wich is a powerful antioxidant), tighten pores and smooth the skin while protecting it from free radicals. It gives my skin a healthy glow and is great to use in lieu of liquid foundation for a more natural look.Zorah Makeup Review - 3

Zorah Makeup Review - 2The eyeshadow in Ombré is awesome. It’s beautiful, smoky colour goes on smooth – lasting all day and it also has some serious skin care benefits. The eyeshadow is a great alternative to most, as the Argan Oil works to support anti-aging, which most people tend to notice the most around the eyes!

Zorah Makeup Review - 1The mascara is great because, unlike most mascaras that tend to damage the lashes, the Argan oil works to promote growth. So it’s a win/win! Not only will your lashes look great, they will benefit from wearing this mascara. What could be better!

Zorah Makeup Review - 4The liquid eyeliner also has similar benefits and is long lasting. It’s very light weight and easy on the eyelids, which can be very sensitive.

Zorah Makeup Review - 5As for the lip gloss, it helped my lips feel smooth and silky. I’m not usually a big fan of gloss (I usually go for matte lip sticks, which I would love to see in this line!) but as far as lip gloss goes – this one was great. It helped my lips stay moisturized in the summer heat while adding a pop of colour.

I usually feel a bit guilty wearing makeup – because I know that it can have some damaging effects on the skin (in comparison to going eau naturalé, with no makeup!), but this makeup line takes all that guilt away.I just love how these products work to support healthy skin. I can look my best and feel my best about it, guilt free!

Zorah Makeup Review - 6Did I mention that Zorah is fully committed to improving the environment in every step of its production and distribution processes? Zorah’s containers are 100% recyclable, their brochures are printed with vegetable-based inks on 100% recycled paper and their products are manufactured locally so as to reduce unnecessary transport. Each step in the preparation of Zorah’s products is another step towards sustainable development.

In Vancouver, you can find Zorah, pure argan beauty products at Choices Markets!

Roses et Reines Gentle Bath Salts are the ultimate relaxation remedy. They’re made with rose water, with roses from Grasse, Bulgaria, Morocco, Turkey and Haute-Provence using a traditional method of steeping the rose petals in oil – resulting in a more saturated rose scent. The Roses et Reines Gentle Bath Salts  pair perfectly with a nice glass of wine and a good book for the ultimate night in.SONY DSC

Roses are known to produce a sedative effect when inhaled – making them the perfect de-stresser. They also help to relieve skin irritation and work to balance out oily skin while leaving it soft and evenly toned. Roses contain natural antioxidants and antibacterial components – which are helpful if you suffer from acne or the occasional pimple as they work to combat these problems without drying out the skin.

Roses are rich in vitamin C, which has some serious benefits of its own. Benefits include anti-aging effects, protection from free-radicals, reduction in inflammation, fading of any spots or post-breakout marks and boosting the skins natural defence against UV rays. If I had to pick any flower to soak in, rose petals would be my number one choice. They’re relaxing and they make your skin more beautiful, I couldn’t ask for anything more!

Roses et Reines Gentle Bath Salts can be found at L’Occitane shop across Canada.

Hello, beautiful! Let me introduce you to Mychelle Dermaceuticals, who create the most effective, nontoxic skin care products. MyChelle products deliver fast, powerful, visible results without nasty ingredients or toxic chemicals. Mychelle experts scoured the world for the most potent natural ingredients and put them to work in their skin-saving formulas that calm, nourish, treat and love your skin to its most beautiful.

Yesterday I tried out the MyChelle Demaceuticals Pure Harmony ‘Hello Beautiful Collection’ for Sensitive Skin. First of all I have to say, I love that these products are vegan! I started out with the Pure Harmony Cleanser – eliminating any residue left from my busy day downtown.

Mychelle-HelloBeautiful

The cleanser was gentle and hydrating, leaving my skin clean, smooth and ready for the Pure Harmony Mask. I applied the mask all over my face and left it on for 20 minutes. The mask was incredibly soothing on my skin, working to calm any irritation caused by environmental stresses.

After wiping away the mask, I applied the Pure Harmony Serum. The serum is packed with anti-oxidants and works to reduce the appearance of puffiness and redness by calming the skin. I absolutely love serums, I feel like they really penetrate the skin with an abundance of nutrients.

Next came the Pure Harmony Mist – which is also rich with nutrients, awakening the skin and promoting regeneration. The mist was a nice touch to the step by step process.

After the mist, I applied the Pure Harmony Cream, adding even more nutrients and moisture to my skin without any irritation – a perfect ending to the five step process.mychellehellobeautifulcollectionforsensitiveskin

The collection also includes an SPF cream that I used the next morning under my makeup to protect my skin from sun damage, slowing down the aging process I just worked (not very hard and with enjoyment) to prevent.

The “Hello Beautiful” collection has 5 sets, “Sensitive Skin,” “All Skin Types,” “Age Spot/UV Recovery,””Dry Skin,” and “Youth Blemish Control.”  The “Hello Beautiful” collections make excellent sample sets (to try something new), travel companions (take your MyChelle faves everywhere you go) and even gifts. Plus, the collectible box is something you can use long after the products are gone.

For those of you with sensitive skin – who are also looking for the added benefit of health safe ingredients, I would recommend checking out MyChelle Dermaceuticals, which can be found at ALL Whole Foods. mychelle-hellobeautifulkit-
