5 Reasons to stay at the Comfort Suites in Kelowna, BC

5reasonstostaycomfortsuiteskelownabanner

On our recent trip to Kelowna, BC we were fortunate enough to book a room at the Comfort Suites Kelowna. It was our first time staying at a Comfort Suites, so we were really looking forward to the experience. The reviews I read online were AMAZING, and their social media presence is very active; always responding to their guests and making suggestions of what to check out in their beautiful city via their Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Like I mentioned in the previous post about our trip to Kelowna, Carla and her team at the Comfort Suites really made us feel welcomed and at home. They took the time to learn our names, suggested places we should visit and eat, and even gave our little Luna a present. The welcome basket in our room was full of treats like chocolates, fresh Okanagan cherries and two tickets for wine tastings at Sandhill winery.

The suites are contemporary, and the layout is spacious. All of the rooms are equipped with a microwave and refrigerator.

  1. Free HOT breakfast: Probably the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had. Comfort Suites Kelowna provides a large variety of breakfast foods; you can choose from your typical “continental breakfast” (cereal, breads, yogurt, and fruits) options, hot eggs, hot meats and make your own waffles.comfortsuiteskelownafreehotbreakfast
  2. Pool/Slide: One of our favorite things about the Comfort Suites Kelowna is the 40-foot indoor waterslide, fun for all ages. The landing pool is the perfect size for lounging and playing games. You can also soak in the hot tub!ninaonthemoon-kelownacomfortsuitespoolhottubindoorslide
  3. Pet Friendly: The Pet Friendly rooms can accommodate up to two pets. Rooms are conveniently located on the ground floor to allow easy access to outside. Your furry friend will also receive a specialty gift bag complete with treats, waste bags, a guide to the local dog parks, and more. We are definitely tempted to take our little Bobi on the next trip.
  4. Contemporary Rooms: The suites are spacious. Besides the bed(s) t
  5. here is a sitting area with an ergonomic couch and coffee table, and a desk with computer chair for business clients. Each room has in-room coffee makers, microwaves, refrigerators and individual climate controls. The beds/pillows are very comfortable. Oh, wired and wireless internet!ninaonthemoon-spaciouscontemporaryroomscomfortsuiteskelowna
  6. Convenience: Located near shopping/restaurants, world-class wineries, great golf courses, on and off leash parks, and of course, the beautiful downtown and Okanagan Lake beaches.

It’s no wonder that the Comfort Suites Kelowna has won the Choice Hotels Gold Awards three consecutive years.  If you’re headed to Kelowna, I highly recommend staying at the Comfort Suites Kelowna, their customer service, housekeeping and product quality exceeds standards. You’ll feel right at home.

Family Adventure: Roadtrip to Kelowna

ninaonthemoon-familyroadtripkelownabc-tiguanvw-comfortsuites-lavenderfieldsRoadtrips have always been a part of my life, I have so many awesome memories of when my parents would pack up the van and take us on a trip down to Honduras, Tennessee and New Orleans.  My brothers, sister and I loved to read/tell stories, play guessing games and sing in the car. Those were really special moments, family bonding at its best.

So it’s no surprise that I want to continue that tradition of exploring and family bonding with my own little family.  Gabriel had to go to Kelowna to shoot a wedding for a couple of days, so I decided it would be fun for Lunita and I to tag along for the ride. Our plan was that while he worked, we would hang out at the hotel and when he was off, we’d explore the town of Kelowna together.

Alright, I’ll admit it, I was a feeling a little bit of apprehension since the drive to Kelowna is about a four hours and Luna was only four months old. I wasn’t sure how she’d deal spending so much time in her car seat. Thankfully, it was smooth sailing, she slept most of the way. And when she woke up, we pulled over, had a nice stretch and took a couple minutes to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Okanagan.

comfortsuiteskelownanotmroadtrip

We checked in at the Comfort Suites Kelowna, a Gold Award-winning hotel just minutes away from wineries, the lake and Downtown. The staff and GM Carla really go above and beyond to make their guests feel right at home, from the moment you step into their hotel you a greeted with a hello and warm smile. We were in awe when we entered our room, it was spacious, great natural light and a nice view of the mountains.

But what really won me over, was the welcome basket. It was packed with treats, tour pamphlets/guides, 2 tickets for wine tastings, a handful of FRESH Okanagan cherries and a warm welcome note! Oh, and the team gave Lunita a cute blanket too.

While Gabriel was working, Lunita and I hung out in the hotel pool. This was her FIRST time in a pool and she really loved it.

Breakfast was HOT, delicious and FREE; to eat the options are hot eggs, hot meats, make your own waffles, breads, cereals and yogurt. And to drink: coffee, tea, milk and a variety of juices. I made myself two breakfast sandwiches with hot eggs and hot bacon. Gabriel made himself some waffles and couldn’t resist some bacon.

Overall, our stay at the Comfort Suites Kelowna was very comfortable and enjoyable.

okanaganlavenderfarmherbkelownaninaonthemoonfamilyroadtrip

Of the four days we were in Kelowna, Gabriel had two of those days off, so we were able to check out the Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm, a beautiful farm property with sweeping views of Okanagan Lake. I loved walking around the gardens, smelling the different lavender and listening to the buzzing of all of the honey bees. Like the name states, there is also a large variety of herbs grown on the property.

We enjoyed walking around the hedge and grass maze, as well as writing wishes onto the wishing tree.

Did I mention that you can pick your own lavender? Gabriel and I each cut a bunch of the darker lavender, which is better for drying.

The views from the patio on the second floor of the main building are breath taking. We had some tasty lavender infused treats, including lavender lemonade and a locally made sourdough and cheese at their Small Bites Cafe.

Also located in the main building is the boutique, where they sell products that they have produced from their harvested lavender and herbs. You can find bath & body, culinary and comfort & home products for sale in the boutique. Of course, I had to pick up some lavender essential oil for our little moon and myself and a bottle of lavender syrup before saying hasta luego.

The Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm  is a very peaceful and calm place. I really can’t wait to go back.

We were also able to visit two wineries and a winery boutique:missionhillfamilyestatesummerhillpyramidwineryssandhillwinerycadonaboutiquekelwonaninaonthemoon

Summerhill Pyramid Winery: I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Summerhill is committed to producing 100% organic wine! Their famous pyramid was being renovated when we visited, so we didn’t get a tour. Summerhill wine is made in the most unique winery in the world.

Mission Hill Family Estate: WOW. Probably one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been to in my life. The architecture, views and outdoor amphitheatre are spectacular. I bet the food is too, but we didn’t eat here. We had our first wine tasting experience at the wine tasting bar, and it was good. Although the wine tasting bar was packed, the customer service the sales associates provided was great. You can also book private tastings.

There are also 42 life size works of acclaimed Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir throughout the property. Beautiful art with an amazing natural backdrop.

Calona Vineyards Winery Boutique: This is BC’s oldest winery location. It offers wine tastings of the largest selection of Sandhill wine, including many rare and hard to find small lots. The experience here was amazing, Ken from Sandhill wines was so descriptive and even helped us with pairing wines and food! My favorite was the icewine, so delicious. We also brought home a bottle of the Wayne Gretzky Chardonnay and Merlot.

This trip to Kelowna was a very memorable one, as it was our very first as a family. During this trip there were many firsts for us; Luna’s first time in a pool, Luna’s first time in a lake, and our first winery tour/tasting. Kelowna is definitely a family friendly town to visit, ago shouldn’t deter you from exploring this beautiful place. I look forward to visiting Kelowna during the Fall/Winter so we can experience Kelowna a different way, snowshoeing perhaps?

Do you remember you first family trip? Tell me about it and relive those beautiful memories!

Besos y Bendiciones~

Downtown Los Angeles: Beautiful Architecture and Historic- Cultural Monuments

Downtown Los Angeles has some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve seen. I swear every district has buildings that have such eye-catching detail. The different styles of architecture in Downtown Los Angeles are really breath-taking and I highly recommend walking around and taking a look for yourself. And if you aren’t going to be in DTLA any time soon, why not take a stroll thru your downtown and explore the architecture? 🙂

Below are some of my favorite buildings in Downtown LA. Some are Historic-Cultural Monuments!

Above: Angels Flight is a funicular railway. Funicular basically means that it’s a little tram that goes up a steep slope. It opened in 1901 and was designated a Historic Monument of LA on August 6, 1962.
Location: Hill Street and 3rd Street.

Above: Eastern Columbia Building was built in 1930s. YES, it’s ART DECO! It stands out from the rest with its beautiful turquoise colour and gold details. It was designated a Historic Monument of LA on June 28, 1985.
Location: 849 South Broadway

Above: The City Hall building  was designed by John Parkinson, John C. Austin, and Albert C. Martin, Sr., and was completed in 1928. It is the tallest base-isolated structure in the world. The tower is art-deco. Interesting fact, the concrete in its tower was made with sand from each of California‘s 58 counties and water from its 21 historical missions. The building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976.
Location: 200 North Spring Street

Above: United Artists Building was designed by the architect C. Howard Crane for the United Artists corporation formed by Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford.Construction was completed in 1927. Its style is Spanish Gothic.
Location: 929 South Broadway

Above: Pantages Theatre opened in 1920. In 1929 it became Warner Bros Downtown Theatre and in 1988 it became the Jewelry Theatre Centre.

Location: 410 W 6th Street

Above: Trinity Auditorium.
Location: 830 S. Grand Ave.
Above: Not sure what this building is called, but it’s gorgeous! I really like how it seems to have 3 different styles/textures. I tried taking a close up of the 3D faces in the wall in the second photo.
Above: Walt Disney Concert Hall by architect Frank Gehry opened on October 24, 2003.
Location: 111 S Grand Ave
Above: Not sure what this building is called, but it caught my attention while walking around DTLA.

Los Alteños in Guadalajara, Mexico

By now I am sure you are very aware of my love for tacos. Los Alteños is one of the tacos spots I regularly frequent when I am visiting Guadalajara, Mexico. You bet they always have a good variety of fresh salsitas, from the pico de gallo, to salsa roja and verde and my ULTIMATE FAVORITE salsa de aguacate! Yum, my mouth is watering…ahaha

At  Los Alteños they serve the most common kinds of tacos; pastor, bistec, chorizo, mixto, cabeza, carnaza, lengua (cow tongue) and sesos (cow brain). You can also choose to eat some vampiros/volcanes and gringas.
It seems like every time I visit Los Alteños I get a minimum of 4 tacos de bistec. I like that the guys at Los Alteños are generous with the meat portion because I can make 4 tacos into  8 little tacos and add as much salsas as I want, without them looking like mountains hahaha. Tacos range in price from $8 MXP (about 60 cents) and $12 MXP (about 90 cents), VERY affordable!

To drink they offer  juice, milkshakes and aguas frescas in many flavours in a small (1/2L) or large (1L) option. I have personally only tried their lima and horchata aguas frescas which were refreshing and light.

They also offer a couple of dessert items, none of which I have tried yet because I am always to full of tacos, hahaha. Maybe next time? If you are ever in Guadalajara, Mexico you should definitely visit Los Alteños. They are open Sunday to Thursday 10am- 1am, and Friday/Saturday 10am- 2am.

"La Casa Azul" Museo de Frida Kahlo: Frida’s Jewelry, Shoes, Accessories and Beauty

The exhibit, “Appearances Can Be Deceiving” in La Casa Azul, Museum of Frida Kahlo is a curated selection of Frida’s personal dresses, jewelry, shoes, accessories and even beauty items.

As a young girl, Frida suffered from Polio, which affected her right leg and eventually stunted it’s growth. She also suffered from a severe spinal injury (from a bus accident), which in turn led to many surgeries throughout her life trying to correct it and she had to wear a cast/back brace. She also had her right leg amputated right below the knee, due to gangrene.
“Appearances Can Be Deceiving” displays how Frida’s vibrant fashion style celebrated her culture while disguising physical conditions. Frida wore traditional Tehuana clothes (long dresses, skirts, blouses) and in-depth shoes to disguise the physical issues.
From what I learned while touring La Casa Azul, Diego Rivera (Frida’s husband) had locked Frida’s closet doors and banned entry to anyone, after he passed away, he had left one of his close friends in charge and made sure that the doors remained closed. His reasoning was that he didn’t want Frida’s personal belongings to be mistreated/damaged. Anyways, his friend decided that Frida’s closet was to be opened, only after she had died. She passed away in 2002, and the Museum of Frida Kahlo decided to open Frida’s closet doors years later…and it is only until last year that the public has been invited to browse some of her personal items on display in the exhibit, Appearances Can Be Deceiving.
I can only imagine how excited and emotional the individuals who sorted through Frida’s closet were. There was clothes, jewelry, love letters, sketches, perfume and even a bottle of Revlon nail laquer. Imagine being able to not only touch her personal belongings, but SMELL her essence? Must have been an out of this world moment.
I am thankful that I was able to feel her presence while exploring her home, La Casa Azul. Appearances Can Be Deceiving is a once in lifetime experience and is on display until November 2013.

Carnitas Loros Ferr 1 in Mexico City, Mexico

Before heading into Diego Rivera’s Museum, Anahucalli, Gabriel and I asked some of the locals where we could find some GREAT tacos. The majority suggested we try Carnitas Loros Ferr 1 down the street.

Whenever we are in Mexico, Gabriel has to have tacos de buche, so he was thrilled to see that they were offered at Loros Ferr 1. You can just see how pleased Gabriel was with the arrival of his delicious tacos de buche. And just incase you were wondering, buche is “pork stomach.” Good buche is tender and only slightly chewy, which this was!
I went for the typical tacos de carnitas and they were delicious! Of course, I added my favorite taco toppings of pico de gallo, salsa de aguacate and freshly squeezed lemon. Oh yes, the tortillas were freshly HAND-MADE!!!!

The service at Carnitas Loros Ferr 1 was great, staff was courteous and food was delivered quickly.

Brew Co in Manhattan Beach, CA

We were heading towards Torrence to return our Toyota Prius V and realized that we had about six hours to kill before catching our flight to Vancouver. So I checked the GPS for a beach that was  around Torrence and LAX and stumbled upon Manhattan Beach, a beachfront City located in SW LA.

All I can say is that Manhattan Beach is BEAUTIFUL. There are many cute boutiques, coffee joints, eateries and pretty houses to look at too.

We parked our car on the main street, Manhattan Beach Boulevard and headed downhill towards to beach on foot. We were excited to see that there was a pier to enjoy too, so we continued our walk on the Manhattan Beach Pier and appreciated the beautiful view; people swimming, playing volleyball, fishing and of course a Cali must, SURFING!

After a while, our stomach’s started to grumble and we were ready to get some lunch, so we headed back up the hill on Manhattan Beach Boulevard and came across a couple of restaurants. After checking out a couple of the menus, we decided to take a seat at Brew Co.
Image from Brew Co.

We were seated quickly and had a great view of the beach. Brew Co has a a good variety of choices for food and drinks on their menu. Their appetizer list is great, you can have the typical appy of nachos, calamari, wings or go for some kabobs or filet mignon chili.

They have 11 different kinds of salads to choose from and have lunch and dinner sized portions. I’m not really a salad kind of eater when I go to restaurants, so unfortunately I didn’t try one, but Hawaiian Ahi Salad was tempting.

Yes, they also have sandwiches and burgers, which come with your choice of one side. Gabriel ordered the Hickory Burger: USDA PRIME ground chuck topped with bacon, two onion rings, homemade hickory BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, tomato and lettuce served on a homemade sesame seed bun…with a side of fries. His hickory burger was literally half the size of his head. I still don’t know how heat managed to put that thing in his mouth hahaha.

He really liked his Hickory Burger, said the patty was juicy and was happy that there were more than 2 pieces of onion rings inside!

I ordered the Tex-Mex Chipotle Burger: Seasoned USDA PRIME ground chuck, jalapeno Jack cheese, grilled Anaheim chilies, green leaf lettuce, guacamole, tomatoes, red onions and chipotle aioli on a toasted French roll…with a side of onion rings.

I also enjoyed my meal, but was disappointed that my Tex-Mex Chipotle Burger was not spicy at all. I guess the grilled chilies and chipotle aioli were weak…so I had to pour some Frank’s on it, which is a different kind of heat compared to chipotle and chilies.

Lots of good local and international beers and wines to choose from too. We obviously went for a pint of beer because it’s the perfect pairing for a burger. We’ll give Brew Co another go next time we are in LA for sure.

"La Casa Azul" Museo de Frida Kahlo: Diego Rivera’s Bedroom

Last week I shared some of the photos I took of the kitchen and dining room in La Casa Azul (click here to see). Today I present to you some of the photos from Diego Rivera‘s personal bedroom in La Casa Azul. Yes, although Frida and Diego were married while living in La Casa Azul, they did sleep separately.
The first thing that I noticed when I walked into Diego Rivera‘s room was the pair of signature denim overalls hanging on the wall. I was able to close my eyes and envision  him wearing them while painting one of his many famous murals. His signature overalls and hats also reminded me of the Portrait of Ignacio Sanchez, which is an oil on canvas  he completed in 1927. I felt his presence.

I carefully examined the small bedroom and spotted a miniature of Diego Rivera‘s death mask on top of the cabinet (pictured in photo #2, far right). I also noticed that there were couple of Pre-Hispanic pieces on that same cabinet, which is nothing compared to the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of pieces he collected

Do you have a favorite painting/mural by Diego Rivera?

La Guelaguetza in Los Angeles, California

Yeah, I know! This weekly  spotlight on the delicious food from various restaurants is making my mouth water too!! Hahaha, I’m going to start calling this segment, the Monday Munchies hahaha.

La Guelaguetza is not only THE LA hot spot for authentic Oaxacan food, but also home to one of the largest selections of Mezcals in the USA! And our local LA friends said to believe the hype, that it was DELICIOSO! So you can kind of get a feel of why Gabriel and I were so excited to finally sit down and eat at La Guelaguetza!

Bueno, upon arriving, we were warmly greeted and quickly seated. And like any good Mexican restaurant, the complimentary totopos, or “tortilla chips” were served. But to our wonderful surprise, they were served with a side of MOLE (moh-leh), instead of your typical pico de gallo!!!!!! ^.^ Now if you haven’t tried MOLE before, oh mai gawsh you are missing out!

There were many delicious authentic Oaxacan options on the menu, so we asked our server to recommend a dish that we could share.  He suggested we try the Especial de Carnes, which includes: grilled tasajo (thinly sliced grilled beef), cecina (thinly sliced, salted and partially dried beef or pork), chorizo and Oaxacan string cheese. Served with rice, black beans and green salad.

We liked the Especial de Carnes, but I honestly don’t know if it was worth the $16. I was disappointed with the store bought tortillas that had clearly been warmed up in micowave…which were advertised on their menu as freshly hand made.
Onto our next dish…a plate of fried CHAPULINES (grasshoppers). Yes, I was feeling adventurous and in need of something high in protein (and crunchy!), hahaha! I had never eaten grasshoppers before, so I figured I might as well check that off my bucket list! We also asked if we could have a sampling of three moles on the side (red, black and coloradito).

When I saw this huge plate of CHAPULINES infront of me, I thought I had lost my mind…forget it, I was about to bail eating those hopping insects…ah, f#CK it, I grabbed one, closed my eyes and started chewing…and chewing….and chewing. Damn, these little grasshopper were dry and crunchy!! Hahaha, mind over matter…forget they’re grasshoppers that have legs and eyes and poop inside….by making TACOS!!

I grabbed a tortilla, spread some mole negro, added some Oaxacan cheese, sprinkled a handful of grasshoppers ontop, rolled it up and took a bite….mmmmmmuch better! I highly recommend eating tacos de chapulines! Hahaha, I had about 5, each time rotating between moles (rojo, negro and coloradito).
